Meanwhile, On the October 10th episode of MBC Radio‘s ‘Younha’s Starry Night‘, Jewelry‘s Yewon filled in for DJ Younha, who had to call in sick.

Yewon has previous DJing experience as she hosted SBS Radio‘s ‘Kwanghee & Yewon‘ with ZE:A‘s Kwanghee, so she was able to pull the show off despite being called in at short notice to cover for the emergency. Her funny stories and cute antics easily filled Younha’s unfortunate absence.

Star Empire stated, “Yewon was suddenly called in as a one-day DJ on the evening of the 10th to fill in for Younha, who had fallen sick. She had DJing experience, so she was able to pull everything off naturally without a hitch despite not having much time to prepare.”

Younha opens up about her past battle with panic disorder

younha
Singer Younha recently sat down for an interview and shocked fans by revealing that she previously suffered from a panic disorder for one-and-a-half years.

Younha spoke in-depth about her panic disorder and revealed, “Because I suddenly took a break from the stage, I suffered a panic disorder. I didn’t go outside often and I disliked meeting people. Because I saw bad events being known to the public, I became even more depressed. I thought that I possibly couldn’t sing anymore. When I was at my lowest point, the staff members who are beside me right now knew of my situation and told me, ‘You are the best singer to me’ and ‘You can rise again’ and encouraged my self-esteem that way.”

She continued, “After my debut, because these staff members have been with me for eight years, they know me the best, and they are the people who helped me endure. When you’re climbing one big mountain and look back, it can be terrifying. But I think that this was a time that I really needed. If I didn’t go through that, I will wonder with what thoughts am I living. For each album, I used the cliche term, ‘growth’, but this time it really is a growth-like growth.”

Younha then gave a message to her fans and shared, “I’m sorry for causing worries during that time and from now on, I will work hard to show myself living well. Not caring about the popularity rank, to everyone who likes me, I want to give them the faith that I could be a Younha they can be proud of.”

Younha reveals she dated a celebrity she chased after for 5 years

On the November 30th broadcast of SBS‘s ‘Go Show‘, singer Younha confessed that she is the type to go after someone she wants until they relent.

The singer shared, “I once confessed to a celebrity in real-life. Most of the time, I’m the one to give my phone number first. The other’s opinion is not that important to me. If he doesn’t call, then I can just call him. When I call and he doesn’t pick up, I’m the type to say, ‘Really? Are you too lazy? I’ll call back later then.’”

Younha then revealed, “I chased my first love for five years. Every time we met, I said to him ‘Oppa, I like you’ and said it to the point that he would get annoyed and respond, ‘Are you saying that again?’. During that time, I left for Japan and returned after 1 year and 6 months. I met him again by chance at a salon and that oppa said, ‘You got prettier.’ We started dating for 2 years and naturally broke up. That friend is still actively promoting these days. We get along as friends,” raising viewer’s curiosity about just who this celebrity may be.

She continued, “My dating style is going after [who I like], getting closer, and taking satisfaction at him becoming mine”, bringing laughter to viewers.

Sentimental Concert VOICE AVENUE
- YOUNHA, URBAN ZAKAPA, JOHN PARK

Urban
Forlorn
Ballad

Caminando por una triste AVENUE (Avenida),
Me encuentro con esos recuerdos,
demasiado confuso de entender,
demasiado vulnerablede tocar,

Walking down a forlorn AVENUE,
I encounter those memories,
too hazy to grasp,
too vulnerable to touch,
but too beautiful to pass by.
Yeah, I know
only your VOICE can save this wandering soul
from hopeless nostalgia.

Younha’s ‘Supersonic’ Flies High

Considering that Younha was the original “young, pretty and talented” singer, way before IU and Juniel became the darlings of Korea, it seems pretty unfortunate that she appeared to have fallen by the wayside over the past two years. Sporadic output could have been a factor.

For most new K-pop fans, the only way to know of her is either by chancing upon her in OST work or live stages, or come to think of it, televised performances from days past.

That she was embroiled in a lawsuit with her management firm, Lion Media, probably did not help matters either. Happily, she has managed to put aside most of the troubles, with her latest album, titled Supersonic.

With a mix of uptempos and slower songs, aimed at showcasing her versatility, musically and vocally, does she deliver on the title’s promise? It’s worth finding out through a song-by-song review of the album.

1. Supersonic: The album opens very nicely with this rock number, which has a very nice radio-friendly sound that makes it a pleasant listen. With its inspiring lyrics of getting over past failed relationships and back into love again, this song sets the tone nicely for the album, both as a hint as to upcoming songs as well as the sound to expect.

2. People: Another tune in the same vein as the title track, but less anthemic in feel, with lyrics expressing a typical mundane day (Today is better than yesterday and tomorrow is brighter than today/But it has nothing to do with me because this typical day will flow however it wants). Not as impressive as the opener/title track, but then again, the song still sticks with the musical theme of the album.

3. Rock Like Stars (featuring Tiger JK): Ramping up the loud factor is this track, which draws from glam rock and serving up a charge for the listeners. That the lyrics encourage the listeners move along to the song help in upping in making the song danceable. With the energy in this song, it is one that I hoped to see being performed live on a music programme someday.

4. Run: This song moves Younha back into more comfortable territory, a pop-rock creation driven by her nice airy vocals. With a pleasant synth melody driving the song as a whole, and syncing perfectly into the chorus (take notes, Super Junior), this was a track that was pleasant to listen on loop, and a deserving lead single.
[Pict] Run MV

5. No Limit: Pinching a little off the punk-rock sound which Cherry Filter are known for, but with a smoother edge and gentler vocals. While not as attention grabbing as the earlier track, it serves to nicely continue with the up-tempo theme.

6. Shower: Slowing down nicely the album, this song takes Younha into a melodramatic zone, starting with MOR-inspired strings and piano. Despite this, the song does not descend into a snooze fest, instead being perfectly listenable to the end. Still it came across as one of the less impressive songs in the album.

7. Would We Have Changed (Featuring John Park) : And from one of the duller songs, the album segues into one of the highlights. In many ways, the choice of John Park as a guest vocal was a very inspired one, as the two practically complement each other. Also if John Park brought some of his influences to the song’s production, then it probably showed, given how the song seemed to contain a nice personal feel, in terms of the tune. This was probably another track worth looping on end.

8. Set Me Free: Another gentler piano and drum driven piece that builds up slowly to a slightly rousing chorus. Despite the song being hard to fault in terms of composition and vocally, as well as how well it fitted the album, it did not really seem to stand out. Maybe because of the uniform quality of the album so far, but partly because of how the production was slightly dulled out.

9. Pasta Cream Sauce: An up-tempo song that shows Younha in territory she is most comfortable with, with its rather orthodox use of guitars and drums to create the sound, as well as her voice giving the song the usual rock-lite treatment. While the song does not break from the unified sound of the album, it serves as a nicer break from the mellower compositions earlier on.

10. Waiting: Largely guitar and piano based, with a string arrangement and some electric guitar for the chorus, this mid-tempo song is continues on the rock-lite theme of the album. However, it proves to be more stimulating than some of the earlier tracks, partly due to the soaring chorus.

11. Driving (Featuring Jay Park): With a heavy R&B beat, this song serves as a 180-degree turnaround from the previous tracks, and is probably the closest to pop this album comes to, apart from the first few tracks. While the track could have been placed earlier on, its position in the later part of the album is probably more justified, given how it came across as being quite repetitive in the later parts. Besides, nothing like an uptempo to break nicely the album flow.

12. Hope: The last song off the album, and probably very apt sound-wise. With just an acoustic guitar, her voice and some reverb, it is a very nice and low key way to end the album. Despite this, the song never comes across as dull or downbeat, partly because of how it still sounds rather upbeat, and also due to the lyrics, which touched on the joys of discovering a trusted love.

To sum up, this album was definitely a cut above most of the K-pop albums released this year, as well as proof that good things indeed to come to those who wait (especially her long suffering fans). It was really nice to find that over this time, what came out was a really cohesive album which was low on filler and where every song fitted into the album’s concept and the overall sound.

For those new to her, or have not bothered with her material previously, it is worth taking the chance with this album, partly as the standard by which full length albums should achieve in terms of cohesion, as well as to discover Younha’s talent and versatility, judging from the ease with which she copes with the varied songs off the album.

Having said that, there were some songs that stood out more than others. I particularly liked the opener “Supersonic”, the collaborations with John Park “Would We Have Changed” and Tiger JK “Rock Like Stars”, as well as the promoted single “Run”. Also worth mentioning are the last track “Hope” and “Waiting”.

Still, the rest of the album was an enjoyable listen, to say the least. For being such a cohesive and high quality album, this release deserves a 5/5, being one that would certainly please existing fans, as well as converting new ones into the fold.

A Good “Run” For Younha’s Comeback

As someone who simply adores Younha but has been entirely dissatisfied with nearly everything she has released since 2009′s “Broke Up Today,” I find “Run” to be a breath of extremely fresh air. It is a song that does what her previous promotions failed to do: combine her enormous talent with a song and image that doesn’t feel forced or overdone. It also avoids boxing Younha into a corner as either a ballad singer or an Avril Lavigne-esque faux-badass rocker. “Run” is, in my humble opinion, quintessentially and authentically Younha — and thus a perfect song with which to make her return to a music industry that has at times lacked some serious depth or breadth.Summer is most definitely in full swing (unless you are in the southern hemisphere, in which case, wear a scarf, Gaya!), and that means that K-pop fans are in the midst of what can probably be termed an avalanche of comebacks. For many, this is great news; lots of comebacks means lots of (potentially) great new music, and couldn’t we all use something fresh to listen to while we’re kicking it on the beach (unless you have a job, in which case, you can listen to it on your morning commute)? However, it also means that K-pop’s currently over-saturated market has become even more so — and as competition stiffens and more and more giant names try to toss their respective hats into the ring, it’s easy for some acts to fall through the cracks.

Younha‘s is perhaps one of these easy-to-miss-if-you’re-not-paying-attention comebacks — especially since she has been off of the scene for quite a bit of time now. A rather quiet and naturally lengthy lawsuit against her former agency, Lion Media, precluded her release of any new material, and for a while there unfortunately seemed to be no end in sight. However, the case was finally settled — and in Younha’s favor, to the tune of a cool 100 million South Korean won ($88,000 USD) — in early February 2012. Free to choose another agency, Younha signed with We Alive and began hinting at a summer comeback not too long ago; a duet with John Park, an MV teaser, and a great deal of wild anticipation later, a fourth full-length album titled Supersonic was released alongside a music video for the first promotional single “Run.”
MV Run by Younha

A good song deserves a good music video, but as we’ve seen time and time again in K-pop, it is rare that an MV is actually up to a song’s standards; MVs are, as my fellow writer Antonia pointed out, increasingly becoming ever more grandiose and over the top. “Run,” however, shuns the trend of overdoing and excess in favor of incredible simplicity, minimalism, and austerity — and indeed, it might even be too simple for some viewers who expected a bit more. Unlike some other MVs that I can think of, there is no complex storyline to be found, nor any far-reaching or other-worldly concept; similarly, there is no dancing, no box in which said dancing could take place, and no blatant abuse of the matrix camera. Interestingly, too, there is no lip-syncing nor any real reference to the fact that Younha is the singer. There is only Younha, her super-cute one piece + Keds that I must have (no additional wardrobe changes), and the ground upon which she…well, runs.
younha-run

And really, if you’re not of the mind to be generously creative, that pretty much sums up the MV in a nutshell: for much of the three minutes and thirty seconds that the video occupies, all Younha does is run — and in the end, viewers are still not really sure what she is running toward. The MV begins with Younha standing on what may be a beach as flashes of light go off around her; in a mini-climax, a burst of light in the shape of what I think (and I welcome corrections) is a whale appears. It glides over Younha’s head and spurs her to take off after it in a sprint. As she runs, she encounters a number of obstacles that crash around her and inspire her to look behind; at one point, she even drops to her knees in exhaustion and defeat, only to rise and continue confidently in the same direction. However, for much of her run — which also includes a fantastic leap featuring an iconic image from the movie E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, a spontaneously-formed jetpack that boosts her across space and time to finally overtake the whale on its journey, and a breathtaking scene in which she stands and basks in a moment of what seems to be peace and triumph — she is wearing the most joyful smile. Needless to say, she looks absolutely gorgeous; the styling for this video was so on point that it makes me want to burn all of the ridiculous monk costumes, swords, face paint, pink rubber gloves, and god knows what else that has appeared in 2012′s MVs.

As mentioned, the MV is aesthetically very simple, but nonetheless astoundingly beautiful. Shot entirely in black and white, it relies on the use of light in order to create contrast and visual imagery. A color version was also produced, but it, too, shies away from the bold in its focus on muted blues, greens, and yellows. The MV’s animation, which provides its remaining backbone and scenery, was created by well-known company Lumpens and similarly uses shades of black, white, and gray to craft images perfect for the feel of the MV. The phrase “less is more” really comes to mind here, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Though I myself have absolutely no idea what the whale represents, or if chasing after the whale was really the point of Younha’s run, I am actually not disappointed by the fact that we never really find out what Younha is running towards. Maybe it’s cheesy, but I think that an MV’s true beauty lies in its ultimate applicability to all of our lives, and not just Younha’s. It doesn’t matter what Younha in particular is running after; like all of us, she has a goal, a dream, a desire, and like all of us, she encounters obstacles and the profound wish to give up when the going gets tough. That the MV is open-ended makes it deeply relatable, and it is perhaps for this reason that I and so many others have found it inspiring in all of its simplicity.

All in all, “Run” currently stands out as something extremely unique in the K-popiverse; perhaps purposefully, it bucks all of the trends currently popular in crafting MVs and provides something of a lesson to those entertainment companies that continue to church out an ever-ridiculous string of MVs that pull cheap party tricks solely in the name of shock value. Though many great MVs feature heart-wrenching stories and bold use of color and accessories, “Run” proves that a great MV can carry on perfectly well without those. If Younha was running towards a triumphant return to the K-pop music scene, then I think she has definitely achieved that goal.
